tasha: but if you could keep talking about your characterizations it would help when i write it up
i can probably get this to you by the weekend
kieran: okok, first the xbox
came out little bit before christmas last year
tasha: This chat is no longer off the record
kieran: okok, first the xbox 360 came out little bit before christmas last year
woefully undershipped
people waited in lines at least overnight to get one
after the initial sales, you couldn't get one before christmas
levels just got to the point where a normal human could buy on this summer
uses conventional dvd
which holds like 9 gigs of info
will be coming out with an hddvd add on before year's end
the hd dvd is the rival format of sony's bluray - the next generation high defintion format war
*more on that later
xbox 360 builds on the success of the original xbox's xbox live online gaming community
where you played one flat fee for internet connection of any game that could connect to the community as opposed to a per game fee, which had previously been the norm
many origionally shipped xboxes were faulty
and some even destroyed the media they were reading
xbox 360 has a pretty healthy library of games, and most (if not all) are available in high definition up to 1080i
xbox 360 is not backwards compatible with all prior xbox games, only the most popular, turning some of your old xbox games into coasters
xbox live, the online community is interesting because you can yell at everyone you're playing with through a headset
really fun
like voip
if i think of more xbox stuff i will include
------------------------------
playstation three, using the cell processor, also an ibm design (the xbox 360 processers are based on an updated x86 ibm as well)
playstation's processing power and memory bandwidth beat the living crap out of xbox 360's
playstation has been known for having ps only *must have games by huge developers
final fantasy, capcom etc... but due to their late entry into the market (ps3 comes out 11/17) some companies have opted to produce games for ps3 *and 360
ps3 will come equipped with bluray dvd
which holds many more of those lovely gigabytes than the rival hddvd
microsoft and toshiba having been waging a war against sony's bluray effort
double, triple, and quad layer bluray discs have been created and can possibly fit up to 200 gb of information on one bluray disc
wheras hddvd's upper limit is somewhere near 30gb... not a huge difference now, but who is ever going to need more than 64k of ram right?
sony's bluray also has the backing of most of the major movie labels
and those who are producing movies for hddvd are also making bluray
wheras many bluray discs will not be available in the hddvd format
the only advantage that hddvd has over bluray is that currently bluray players are 1000 dollars and hddvd players are 500 dollars
so this is interesing, ms is releasing the hddvd add on at 200 bucks, and the console costs 300/400, for a combined 500/600
the ps3 will cost 600
and will have, built in, the ability to play bluray (superior in capacity and in content as far as movies go)
sony is obviously taking a huge hit in selling the consoles below costs (which game manufacturers tend to do) hoping to recoup costs from software and peripheral sales later
sony and xbox both have harddrives and wireless controllers, sony's ps3 will be able to support true 1080p out of the box, as opposed to the xbox's 1080i
p = progressive scan i = interlaced
sony is hitting some major roadbumps in production, and will be shipping only about 400k units to the us for the release
which means that you will be more likely to be hit by lightning while being bitten by a shark dying from a beesting after you've just won the lottery than to get the ps3 before christmas
tasha: maybe you should have him wearing armani
kieran: there are many more tech specs that make the ps3 a superior machine, but i think that covers what the layman would be interested in

and for the wii
if you know anything about high definition, it is here like you cant release something that won't do high def
so what does nintendo decide to do?
release something that's not high definition
nintendo knows that "gamers" are going to have an xbox or a ps3... or both
so they're branching out, they want the wii to be the box that gramma plays
and that your little retarded nephew can sit in front of and drool all over
the problem is.... this has worked for nintendo before
every console they've shipped since the super nintendo has been at least 3 years behind the market in terms of technology
but their games are proprietary
and just fun
you can't get an awesome experience like mario galaxy playing another console
they've also implemented an xbox live like marketplace
where you will be able to download (and pay for) any nintendo game for any other nintendo system... ever
wanna play the original mario bros? 5 bucks and a 1 minute dl and it's yours
they're going with a paltry 9gig regular dvd as well, and are using a specially developed ibm chip too (gecko)
(ibm makes bank during these console wars)
nintendo wii has also revolutionized the idea of a controller by making it kinda like a wand
motion sensors and stuff, so you can like swing a virtual golf club, or cast a virtual fishing reel
it looks pretty fun to play
and this is what they're going for.
btw all next gen remotes are wireless
but again, i stress... lack of hd support ticks the f outta people
people = me
-----side note for ps3.... they are also going to go with an online xbox live type deal... so that it's not a per game online fee. but since they haven't done anything like it before, they don't really know how it's going to work out
-------------------------
are there any points that i may not have hit on?
tasha: so basically xbox is a spoiled punk from last year
and ps3 is a european playboy
while wii is cute and fun
like a yorkie
and it's time to buy ibm stock
kieran: exactly, but ps3 is also going to be delayed until 07 in europe... so more like japanese playboy
but you got it down
